Burger Shack

Burger Shack by Island Creamery

The zinc sheet backdrop of the exterior display is pretty eye-catching, and some might say the zinc sheet makes the whole look of the concept look pretty dingy, but I like it! Pretty much reminds me of a westerner's garage or something like that.

Anyway, I had the time to check this out on one of those bored Friday evenings. I quite like the place. Tucked away in a somewhat corner, its concept is cute, quirky, casual and laid back. I wish they had more comfortable and lush seats though - the general feel of the seating was pretty stop-and-go, standard tables with some normal with-backing chairs. Fortunately no stools, which is one thing I really dislike about some of my favourite chill and hang-out-and-chat places! (I know stools are a strategy to keep people from staying too long, but hey, sometimes when you love a place, you can stay for a really, really long time!)

Ok fine, businesses need table turnover to be profitable, fine I get it.

Mushroom Suisse Burger I had. The burger filling was not too bad in general. The meat patty was satisfactory, the cheese wasn't all that melted (as you can see from the picture) but it was okay to eat and hot at least so I won't say too much about that. The mushrooms, the main ingredient that makes/breaks the burger? Pretty gross.

There were a few stray mushroom bits that fell out when I picked up my order from the counter (just like the one in the photo). That's really okay, but the gross part was that these mushrooms that fell out were COLD. Like refrigerated-for-30-minutes kind of cold? I was a little curious whether they even cooked the mushrooms on the spot. Ugh.

Honestly, I never really care about the presentation of food. As long it looks edible and is pretty decently presented (i.e. different ingredients split on a plate) I'm pretty okay. This burger looks impressive from a distance, but can look kind of weird when it's in front of you. Why do I say that?

I suppose the big dish was supposed to make my dish more appetizing and luxurious but ok no, didn't work for me. Ironically, the large plate dog water-dish (presented very French cuisine style: food in centre of really large plate) made me feel like my burger was too small and totally not worth the money. I extremely hated the tracing paper thing they put my food on because I felt like I was eating takeaway chicken rice (haha), and the ruffling sound it makes when I cut my burger with my fork and knife, ugh, ugh, ugh.

Pulled Pork Burger

This burger was pretty good! The pork itself deserves a 7 out of 10, not too bad for something below $8. I really loved the fries here, something I would come back for, I guess. No burgers for me...

For the price they're charging ($5+ to $8 for a burger), I think the bread really needs to be improved... The bread used is so abnormally thick, and basically the burger ratio is all out of balance: Too much bread, so-so amount of ingredients. The boyfriend kept calling it "Sunshine (brand) Bread" because he felt like he was eating burger buns out of store-bought packets.

For me, my burger was made excellent when I threw out the top piece of bread... Hahaha.

Okay best dish of all: The Onion Rings

This is pretty good stuff! They're really big and fluffy (as per picture) and just nice for the taste - not too much flour! I forgot the price, but it was pretty affordable - I think they're about $5? They also have really good mayonnaise and tar-tar sauce to go together with the burger or onion rings, so that's a plus.

Will definitely return for the fries & rings. Those are pretty value-for-money (especially with the student offer).

All in all, a disappointing eat. I'm generally not particular picky with food, but you know a good eat when you taste one. This isn't one of them. I'd rather satisfy my burger craving at Carl's Jr or Burger King considering the price.
