Skyve Elementary Bistro & Bar

Days feel exceptionally great when you decide to have an early start to the day, and go out and get a good hearty breakfast/brunch.

Tucked away in some corner in Newton, here's Skyve Elementary Bistro & Bar. If you know where's Newton Food Centre, you should roughly know how to navigate yourself here with the maps on your phone.

It's quite a quiet area in the day time, so it's pretty pleasant to walk around the vicinity and from Newton MRT. Anyway, we arrived to an almost-empty cafe, so perhaps making a reservation is unnecessary. Haha.

Furniture in Wood, Tiffany Blue, Black, White
The furniture in the bistro/bar comes across quite unique and pretty. As you can see, there are 4 main colours, white/cream, tiffany blue, black and wood. By observation, most businesses usually tend to stick with two or three colour combinations rather than 4, but I'm really surprised these 4 colours worked well together to create a very homely, gentle environment, yet still giving off this classy and cool atmosphere.

I'm sure this bistro will look exceedingly pretty at night.

A lot of cafes are particularly into this clipboard-flipping menu style with parchment paper. I do feel it is quite unhygienic as the paper tends to collect dust when stacked, and feel dusty-grainy as a result. Occasionally, the menu also suffers stains and food splatters from patrons' eating styles.

In my opinion, normally, no one goes to a cafe and decides to sit down and then get up to wash their hands before eating. So, having that dusty feeling on my fingers, and having to eat fries with my fingers is quite distasteful. I mean that's what the utensils are for, but sometimes it's easier to eat with your hands, especially for the fries! I mean, imagine poking the fry... and poking it into the chilli sauce and the fry... well, breaks into two (and falls into the sauce pot), and you can't get the fry out of the sauce pot with your fork unless you douse the whole fry in chilli - which just spoils the whole taste of the fry in the end because it tastes of 100% chilli.

You get my drift. Haha.

Artistic-Informative Place Mats
Quite an entertaining read if you're bored waiting for your food.
Moving on to the food...
Skyve Sous Vide Eggs Benedict ($18)
Skyve Sous Vide Eggs Benedict ($18)
Two pictures of my dish from two angles because it was especially delicious! If you like runny eggs, this Eggs Ben will definitely be to your liking. The muffin bread, bacon, mushroom and corn came together very tastefully, without being too overwhelming. A girl can easily finish this dish on her own without feeling too full to do anything else.

Apparently, the eggs are slow-cooked for an hour and hence they have a rather solid outside but is extremely runny and a thick yellow inside. But don't worry, the egg is completely cooked.

Minute Beef Steak Sandwich ($18)
Verdict: Excellent beef, excellent fries, excellent onion rings!

I'm generally not the type to rave about food. I definitely know what I dislike, and will be quick to point it out, but generally for "okay" to "good" to "great" food, my responses will be pretty much the same. After all, if it's edible and quite yummy, I won't complain/compliment at all.

So with regard to this dish, the beef is really just-nice and had no lingering smell of a cow (as some beef steaks have), the fries are the best fries I've ever eaten - crusty on the outside, medium-soft on the inside, not soggy at all, very, very crispy without being burnt - I mean look at that picture, they look like photoshopped fries! Similarly with the onion rings, the onion rings were very crispy on the outside without being/looking burnt and was just-yummy on the inside. All in all, a dish that entirely exceeded my expectations.

A definitely can-return-to place.

A beautiful sunny morning, well-spent at Skyve.
